New passive fibre-optic pressure sensor delivers high-bandwidth dynamic pressure measurement in extreme environments
Evolution Measurement, working with WIKA Optical Sensing announces the availability in the UK of the PD11 optical sensing system, a high-performance solution for dynamic pressure measurement in harsh environments, including gas turbine combustion chamber monitoring.
The PD11 pressure sensor combines a micro-machined sapphire sensing element with a high-temperature fibre-optic lead-out to create a unique passive sensor configuration. Designed for direct mounting on gas turbine combustors, the system enables continuous monitoring of combustion pressure dynamics in demanding operating conditions.
Using a Fabry-Perot optical interferometer, the PD11 measures dynamic pressure while providing the inherent benefits of optical sensing technology. These include operation at extreme temperatures and immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), with no start-up pyroelectric noise.
Unlike conventional remote measurement arrangements, the PD11 can be installed close to the combustion event, eliminating the need for semi-infinite tubes and reducing the risk of fluid build-up. Its close-coupled installation also increases acoustic bandwidth and enables enhanced characterisation of combustion events.
The passive optical sensor is intrinsically safe for use in explosive atmospheres and requires neither a charge amplifier nor a galvanic separator. A compact digital interrogator, which acts as the signal conditioner, can be DIN-rail mounted alongside existing control electronics for straightforward system integration.
The combination of high-temperature capability, passive optical sensing and close-coupled installation makes the PD11 particularly suited to applications where conventional electrical pressure sensors may be limited by temperature, EMI or installation constraints.
Evolution Measurement is now offering the PD11 to customers across the UK, providing engineers and operators with a robust solution for high-fidelity combustion pressure measurement and condition monitoring.
